Hysterectomy and weight loss/muscle tone. Rob McPhail B.App.Sc
A discussion with legendary Andrew Bews the founder of “Buddy up style fitness” and owner of “In - Sync - Fit” in Geelong lead to the writing of this article.
I consulted “Hystersisters.com” to get an understanding of the issue and then came to some conclusions for nutrition and exercise which I’m sure will help.
The issue: Thyroid levels drop as a result of a decrease in estrogen, insulin output is increased from the pancreas, the body becomes more efficient at storing fat and less able to lower blood sugar.
It has been termed “Metabolic Syndrome X” – Insulin Resistance elevated lipids especially triglycerides (obesity coronary heart disease and hypertension all from estrogen deficiency.
As blood sugar rises your appetite increases. The more high glycemic Carbohydrates you eat the hungrier you feel, on the other hand fat slows down the rate at which your stomach processes food and that will lower the blood sugar response to a meal.
So low fat and high carbohydrate meals may make you fat. With menopause, growth hormone plummets and we lose fat burning muscle mass. Then our ability to burn calories falls and excess food turn into fat.
So what do I suggest we do about it?
You could start with bewsy’s buddyup style fitness. Exercising/ Training with Increased weights and lower repititions to promote muscle growth however restricting rest intervals to enable an aerobic effect. Andrew is keen on a TABATA program which will certainly do the trick.
The diet? Well I believe in following World Health Organisations standards, those that apply to Australia. I am for anything that helps support the maintenance/growth of the whole organism “You”.
So there needs to be some balance with reference to macro and micro nutrients in consideration of this issue presented. Cutting to the chase high Protein and fat and lower the carbohydrate.
You must ensure you have the water soluble Vitamins B & C particularly for the maintenance of efficient energy production through the bodies natural process of the Krebs citric acid cycle.
